My English is poor and I need guidance on direct translations, most importantly my character is atrocious as I emphasised on my qualification and title. No intentions of arguing at all. If you have time, guide me and help me with your great English knowledge. Thanks! ;)JessicaTan2511https://www.blogger.com/profile/10822830247084854955noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3040341414543044725.post-19588820865847184052016-05-19T11:54:57.412+08:002016-05-19T11:54:57.412+08:00This comment has been removed by the author.JessicaTan2511https://www.blogger.com/profile/10822830247084854955noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3040341414543044725.post-69729495867114215512016-05-19T11:20:26.727+08:002016-05-19T11:20:26.727+08:00"But it is not recommended for use formally a..."But it is not recommended for use formally at all. If you're writing with all due r...Dear Caryne,
If you're writing with all due respect, I think your first comment actually sounded more polite. And learning from you, I too had copied from the internet. So, look at what oxford has to say:

In its standard use literally means ‘in a literal sense, as opposed to a non-literal or exaggerated sense’, as for example in I told him I never wanted to see him again, but I didn’t expect him to take it literally. In recent years an extended use of literally (and also literal) has become very common, where literally (or literal) is used deliberately in non-literal contexts, for added effect, as in they bought the car and literally ran it into the ground. This use can lead to unintentional humorous effects ( we were literally killing ourselves laughing) and is not acceptable in formal contexts, though it is widespread.

Thanks to all the people like you who misuses the word, Oxford then had no choice but to give in and accepted it for informal usage. But it is not recommended for use formally at all.

JUST MY TWO CENTS TOO! CHEERSSSS!!!

Regards,
Dr. JessicaJessicaTan2511https://www.blogger.com/profile/10822830247084854955noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3040341414543044725.post-44092034094383250342016-05-19T02:42:04.864+08:002016-05-19T02:42:04.864+08:00@caryne - thank you for your sweet comment! I don't agree that the author couldn't use LITERALLY in this case you've mentioned.

Literally could be used in an informal way - used for emphasis or to express strong feeling while not being literally true.

"I have received literally thousands of letters"

"I was literally blown away by such magnificent view"

JUST MY TWO CENTS.
